CTR Employer Spotlight

Spokane Regional Transportation Council (SRTC) is a government agency that does transportation planning for all of Spokane County. They have 11 employees and have been in business for 46 years.

SRTC is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Spokane County. Federal funds for transportation projects and programs are channeled through the agency and awarded to local agencies and jurisdictions that deal with transportation. SRTC also encourages coordination and collaboration between planning and transportation departments at partnering agencies, including the City of Spokane, Spokane Valley, Spokane County, the Washington State Department of Transportation, Spokane Transit, and small cities and towns in order to assure connectivity throughout Spokane County.

SRTC has a staff of transportation professionals who plan for the region's accessibility and mobility. Staff work to collect transportation data and prioritize projects based on available funding. They also do special studies to remedy specific transportation issues or issues in specific areas of the county.

One of SRTC's most crucial services is travel demand modeling.  Modeling is a method of forecasting how the public will use the transportation system now and in the future.  Modeling involves the use of computer software to represent how travel choices are made.  The travel demand model contains inventories of the existing roadway facilities and of all housing, shopping and employment in the area.  Using the model, transportation planners can estimate future traffic volumes in order to be proactive in managing traffic congestion and building transportation facilities (such as roads, park and ride lots, bike lanes and more) to accommodate demand.

Travel demand modeling is used to develop one of SRTC's major products- the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), which is a long term plan that dictates how the regional transportation system will develop over the next twenty years. You can find more information about the MTP at http://www.srtc.org/mtp_2040.html.

SRTC's Mission Statement:

SRTC provides for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods into, within, and through, the Spokane Region with an integration of balanced multi-modal transportation choices.

Quote from SRTC's Executive Director, Kevin Wallace:

"Spokane Regional Transportation Council is instrumental in determining what our transportation system will look like in the future. We work with area jurisdictions to decide what projects will be priorities, help them to obtain state and federal funds to build those projects and offer ourselves as an all-round resource for anyone interested in, or involved with, transportation."

In addition to being the designated Employee Transportation Coordinator (ETC) Staci Lehman, Public Education/Information Coordinator is responsible for outreach to the public to inform people of SRTC's programs and activities and solicit input and opinions on daily activities, studies and plans.

One of Staci's proudest CTR moments was when SRTC's CTR survey results showed a 28.9% reduction in vehicle miles travelled by their employees in 2011.
