Champion Commuter
Norberto Castro - WSDOT Eastern Region
Norberto is a Facilities Planner 2 for WSDOT – Eastern Region.
Norberto has been working a compressed work week schedule for the past 18 years, showing his long-time commitment to a more sustainable commute.
By working four ten-hour days, he’s not only been dependable and hardworking, but he’s also cut down on how often he needs to drive—making a meaningful impact. In his 18 years, he’s saved nearly 70,000 miles from being driven on our roads.
Working longer days in a compressed schedule helps Norberto manage travel to job sites that are farther out, and it fits better with the kind of work he does. It also gives him a bit more flexibility in his week, which has been especially helpful since things shifted after COVID.
Even though there aren’t any major challenges right now, Norberto has stayed open to trying different commute options over the years. He tried carpooling, but it didn’t quite fit with his wife’s schedule. Since COVID, he’s also added some work-from-home days when it’s allowed—showing he’s flexible and always thinking about ways to make his commute more efficient.
ETC, Juli Wallace states, “Since 2019, Norberto has taken a flexible and sustainable approach to commuting by teleworking, working a compressed schedule, and carpooling as both a driver and rider. His efforts have saved approximately 584 trips and $2,990.00, contributing to both personal savings and a more efficient transportation system.”
Congratulations Norberto!
