Champion Commuter
Lena Schwinn, WA State DSHS - Trent CSO/CCNE/Region 1
Lena is a true Commute Smart Champion, having prioritized carpooling to the Spokane Valley office for an impressive 19 years. Over nearly two decades, she has consistently tracked her efforts, saving a total of 2,630 trips. With a 17-mile one-way commute, her dedication has removed an incredible 44,710 miles from our local roads, directly contributing to cleaner air in our community.
Her "why" is deeply personal: Lena carpooled with her mother, who also worked at the agency. This daily ritual provided them with a unique opportunity to "download" and connect during their commutes to and from work. By sharing a single vehicle, they not only strengthened their bond but also ensured that extra vehicles and emissions remained off the road.
Lena’s commitment is best seen in her ability to overcome logistical obstacles. Despite the inevitable scheduling conflicts that arose over 19 years, she and her mother remained flexible. Whether it meant one person staying a few minutes late or adjusting their morning departure, they always found a way to make the carpool work. This flexibility has turned a daily necessity into a powerful environmental statement, making Lena an inspiration to her coworkers and a model for sustainable commuting at DSHS Trent Office.
