Champion Commuter

Johnna Boren - Trent CSO/CCNE/Region 1

Johnna is a Work First Coordinator for WA State DSHS Trent Office. 22 years ago, when she began working for DSHS, her ETC challenged every employee to use a commute option at least 1x per month.

She began carpooling with her sister and mom. When their schedules no longer worked, she found other co-workers to carpool with. It wasn’t always easy to find an employee to carpool with. With varying schedules or employees who were hesitant to leave their car at home, Johnna was always able to share the benefits of carpooling and would find someone. DSHS offers an Emergency Ride Home, so that allowed her to encourage fellow employees to give it a try and not worry about being stranded at work.

She’s been very multi-modal throughout the years. She’s carpooled, walked, worked a compressed work schedule and since the pandemic, now teleworks full time. She’s logged nearly 3,200 trips, saved nearly 37,000 miles and over $10,000 in commuting costs in the last 22 years.

Johnna contributes her success and commitment to the program to her ETC, Nick Swan. She says "Nick has such dedication to the program and keeping his employees informed and motivated!".

Nick says, “Johnna has been a part of our organization for many years and has always been a consistent user of commute options and filling out her calendar even since before I was an ETC for the program”.

Congratulations Johnna!
